Kenya Cane hands over chicken project to Voi women’s group

Kenya Cane has handed over a fully constructed chicken coop and 100 chickens to the Suvirio Women’s Self-Help Group in Voi.

Suvirio is a widows-led collective working to build sustainable livelihoods against socio-economic and climate challenges in the Coastal region.

Formed in 2013, the Suvirio Women’s Self-Help Group brings together widows in Mwatete, Taita, who have united to support one another through income-generating initiatives. After initially engaging in cassava farming and value addition, the group transitioned to poultry farming, a more reliable and scalable venture that has enabled them to earn steady income through the sale of chickens and eggs.

Through collective effort and partnerships, the group has also achieved remarkable milestones, including the construction of 18 houses for its most vulnerable members, restoring dignity, safety, and stability for their families. In addition, their table banking system has helped members educate their children, with several progressing to university and formal employment.

The support from Kenya Cane is expected to significantly boost the group’s poultry production capacity, strengthening income generation and accelerating their long-term goal of expanding housing and acquiring an egg-hatching machine.

Victor Adada, Brand Manager for Kenya Cane, said, “The True Kenyan Spirit is found in communities like Suvirio, women who choose resilience, unity, and self-determination despite the odds. As Kenya Cane, we believe progressive brand storytelling goes beyond visibility; it must reflect values, purpose, and real impact. Supporting initiatives like this allows us to use our platform to amplify authentic Kenyan stories and contribute to sustainable change at the grassroots.”

Catherine Mwazighe, Chairlady of the Suvirio Women’s Self-Help Group, “This support means growth, dignity, and hope for our members. Poultry farming has helped us support our families more consistently, and the additional chickens and housing will allow us to expand and become more sustainable. We are grateful to Kenya Cane for believing in what we are building as women and as a community.”

This initiative underscores Kenya Cane’s continued commitment to championing community-led progress and celebrating everyday Kenyans whose resilience and collective spirit embody the essence of The True Kenyan Spirit.
