You’ve probably been in a situation where you were enjoying your rent at home when all of a sudden the lights went off or you came home after a long day only to find that the KPLC tokens ran out some time during the day.
It’s quite frustrating when KPLC tokens run out since most of us start doing the math of how we’ll go to sweet talk a neighbour to allow us to top up in their house or go to the main meter to top up from there. But what if you don’t have these options or what if you want to top up from your house?
It’s possible to reload your KPLC tokens from your house once they run out. Though it’s not a good idea to let your tokens run out, knowing how to top it up from your house can be helpful.
Kenya Power has both postpaid and prepaid methods for buying electricity. The prepaid system, which is the token-based system, is mainly used in residential areas and small businesses. After purchasing prepaid electricity, you receive a unique 20-digit code which you enter into your meter to top up your electricity units. You can use several methods to purchase electricity tokens. They include:
MPESA
- Dial *977# on your Safaricom line
- Select 1, Prepaid services (token)
- Choose Buy token then enter your meter number
- Enter the amount you want to purchase then enter your MPESA pin to complete the transaction
Equity
- Dial *247# then select Paybill
- Enter Business number 888880 then enter your meter number as the Account number
- Enter the amount you want to purchase then enter your PIN to complete the transaction
Airtel
- Dial *334# then select Paybill
- Select KPLC under Categories then select KPLC Prepaid
- Enter your meter number and the amount you want to purchase
- Enter your PIN to complete the transaction
You will receive a message from KPLC with your tokens to load into your gadget. Contrary to popular opinion, you don’t need electricity to load tokens. To load the code, the CIU must be plugged to a wall socket and must have well-powered batteries. These two factors are the secret to reloading your units whether you have electricity in your house or not. Here’s how you can top up your tokens without electricity.
- Ensure that your CIU has well powered batteries. Check your device to know the type and how many of batteries you need
- Once you insert the new batteries, the device should light up indicating that the batteries have enough power
- Plug the device to the wall socket which you normally use to load tokens. The CIU must be plugged into a socket since it uses electric wires in the house to communicate with the meter
- You must also ensure that you don’t have a power blackout in your area. If so, you won’t be able to load your tokens until electricity is restored
- After plugging in your CIU, switch on the socket and enter the 20-digit token number from KPLC
- Press enter to reload your meter and restore power in your house
