Buying a car is a great investment. Sure, a car depreciates in value as soon as you drive it home. However, it’s a good investment in many ways as it improves the quality of your life. Additionally, you can use it as a side hustle or you can secure a loan using your car’s logbook.
After purchasing a car, you’re issued with a logbook which is a document proving that you’re the owner of the car. This is a must have for every car owner as it contains your details and details of your car making it easy to prove that you’re the owner.
A logbook should be kept in a safe place to ensure that it doesn’t get lost or damaged. However, you can get a replacement if it’s lost or damaged. The process of replacing a lost or damaged logbook in Kenya has been simplified thanks to the digitization of government services.
It is one of the many services offered in the NTSA service portal. Therefore, an applicant doesn’t have to spend hours waiting in line to be served.
Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to replace a lost logbook in Kenya.
Requirements
- Police abstract
- Tape lift report
- Identification document of registered owner
- Original and copies of Certificate of Incorporation or Business Registration Certificate (for companies)
- Affidavit
Process to replace a lost logbook in Kenya
- Start by visiting the nearest police station to obtain a police abstract, an affidavit signed and stamped by a lawyer and a tape lift report. The police abstract and affidavit verify that the logbook was either lost, stolen or damaged while the tape lift report contains details of the car such as chassis number, engine number and number plate. Inspection is conducted by the DCI. The car in question is presented at the DCI office together with the identification documents of the car owner. Once done, the DCI office will issue a tape lift report.
- Create an NTSA TIMS account and log in.
- Check to see if the vehicle with the lost logbook is on the list of My Vehicles
- After confirming, select Vehicle Registration then select Apply for Duplicate Logbook, tap Create New
- Select Apply next to the registration number of the car whose logbook is being replaced
- Fill the form appropriately ie notification methods, reason of duplicate logbook, authorized person ID, authorized person to collect, police abstract and tape lift report
- Tap Next then make payment of Ksh 2550 through your preferred method then select Complete
- Print the invoice generated after payment as it is proof of payment
- If the application is successful, you will receive a notification to update you
- When the logbook is ready for collection, you will receive a notification. You can also check the status of your application on the NTSA portal. It normally takes 7 to 14 days for the process to be complete
- Once the logbook is ready for collection, the authorized person should carry their ID and got to the pick up point that was selected during the application process
