M-KOPA has indicated that it has managed to over 1 million of its branded smartphones within just 12 months of launch.
The smartphones are assembled at their M-KOPA’s facility in Nairobi, which has quickly become the largest smartphone assembly plant in Africa by volume.
Since launching the plant in 2023, the company has created over 400 new jobs and secured ISO 9001 quality certification in 2024.
Following the success of its flagship X20 smartphone developed in partnership with Human Mobile Devices (HMD), M-KOPA has expanded its range to include the X2, M10, and S34 models. The company also plans to introduce new devices in the second half of 2025.
M-KOPA’s devices come embedded with its Smart Money Platform, enabling customers to access a suite of essential services such as affordable credit, health insurance, and device protection. This model, the firm says, has helped transform the smartphones into more than communication tools they serve as gateways to financial empowerment for everyday earners.
M-KOPA-branded smartphones are currently available exclusively through its sales agents in Kenya, Uganda, Nigeria, Ghana, and South Africa.
M-KOPA CEO and Co-Founder Jesse Moore said “Selling 1 million M-KOPA smartphones within 12 months demonstrates the trust that customers have in our brand and reputation for both quality and innovation. We are not just selling affordable smartphones—we’re selling financial inclusion tools that transform lives.”
