I&M Foundation clarifies role in Ngong Forest development

I&M Foundation has issued a statement clarifying its position regarding a proposed development in Nairobi’s Ngong’ Road Forest.

In the statement, I&M Foundation indicated that Project Imarisha Ngong’ Road Forest is a non-commercial, community-centred environmental initiative launched in May 2024 to restore degraded forest land, conserve biodiversity and create inclusive green spaces that support public wellbeing and climate resilience.

They continued to state that it is being implemented in consultation with local communities and in full alignment with environmental regulations.

According to the Foundation, prior to the project starting together with Kenya Forest Service they undertook public participation initiatives over a 3-month period. This was in consultation with the Ngong Road Community Forest Association as well as local administrations in Langata, Dagoretti South and Kibera sub-counties.

The statement indicated that the project is funded by I&M Foundation, which in turn is sustained by an annual endowment from I&M Bank Limited.

The scope of the project is limited to.

  • Green Park Infrastructure: construction of ablution blocks, rangers’ housing and fencing of 14.2 km of the sanctuary forest block
  • Forest Restoration: nursery establishment, regeneration of degraded areas and opening of additional trails
  • Water Infrastructure: borehole drilling, water reticulation and installation of water points to sustain the nursery and park

The statement continued to state that I&M Foundation and I&M Bank were not aware of or have any association with the alleged hospitality development at the centre of the discussions on social media and media outlets.

I&M Foundation indicated that it reaffirms its commitment to transparency and environmental responsibility. It will also continue working with stakeholders to ensure this project delivers lasting conservation value for both people and planet.
