Politics is one of the most hotly discussed topics in Kenya. Whenever you pass by a group of people, you’ll probably overhear them talking about politics or something relating to politics. In recent months, being involved in political discussions has become the norm of the day. Whether on social media platforms or on the streets, more people are starting to play an active role in politics. One of the best ways of getting your foot in the game is by becoming a member of a political party.
Political awakening has prompted some to want to join a political party so that they can make impactful changes in the country. The constitution gives every Kenyan citizen the right to participate in political activities including joining a political party. There are 90 registered political parties in Kenya that suit a wide range of beliefs and culture. Therefore, every Kenyan can find a political party that aligns with their views.
When a person becomes a member of a political party, they are able to:
- Participate in the activities of the political party
- Campaign for the political party or cause
- Contest for leadership positions in the party
- Run as a candidate in the party nomination for candidates for general election and by-election
- Access party documents and records
The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties is in charge of several functions relating to political parties including party membership. They ensure that no one is a member of more than one political party and make public the list of all members of political parties.
The process of registering as a member of a political party is fairly simple and straightforward. You can do it online or in person. Here’s a guide on how to register as a member of a political party in Kenya.
Requirements to register as a member of a political party
Each political party has its requirements for membership. However, there are general requirements that every applicant must meet. They include:
- Must be a Kenyan citizen
- Must be above 18 years
- Have a valid ID card or passport
Application process to register as a member of a political party
You can either apply physically or online to become a member of a political party.
Physical application
- Visit the respective political party office and pick a Party Membership Verification Form
- Fill the form with accurate details including name of the applicant, name of the applicant’s county, age, gender and occupation of the applicant etc.
- Sign it and return to the party office.
- Once the party approves the application, they will forward the details to the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties through the Integrated Political Parties Management System (IPPMS)
- The registrar will then verify the membership
- Once verified, you become a member of the political party
Online application
- Visit the eCitizen website and log in to your account
- Under Register of Political Parties, select Registration to a party
- Fill in the details of the party and your voter registration details then press okay
- The application will be verified by the registrar of political parties then you will become a member of the political party
To check your political party membership status, visit the Office of the Registrar of Political Parties website then click on Check your membership status on the top right corner or dial *509# enter your ID number and select Checking party membership.
Note: Political parties reserve the right to decide who can join their party even if you meet all the requirements.
